The money-per-hour trick
Big payouts aren't always the best money. How to work out what a GTA money maker really earns per hour, and why setup and cooldowns change everything.
Published
The biggest payout isn’t always the best money maker. What matters is money per hour, and most players never calculate it.
Try it: add your activities to the money per hour ranker and it sorts them for you.
The formula
Money per hour = payout ÷ minutes per run × 60
“Minutes per run” means everything: setup, travel, the job itself and any cooldown you just sit through.
Why it changes the ranking
| Activity | Payout | Real time per run | Money per hour |
|---|---|---|---|
| Big job | $1,000,000 | 120 min | $500,000 |
| Quick job | $300,000 | 25 min | $720,000 |
These numbers are just an example of the math. The quick job pays less each time but earns about 44% more per hour.
Three things that ruin the math
- Setup missions. A finale that pays well but needs five setups is a long job. Count them.
- Cooldowns. If you can’t repeat a job for 45 minutes, that time counts unless you fill it with something else.
- Cuts and fees. Count what lands in your account after crew cuts and costs.
Stack your money makers
The best grinders never wait. While one activity is on cooldown, they run another. Two average money makers alternated can beat one great one with long waits.
Then plan the purchase
Once you know your real number, put it in the grind planner to see how many days until you can buy what you want.
